Pakorn Aiewsakun recently joined the department in late 2017. His research primarily focuses on evolutionary studies of various pathogens, including both viruses and bacteria, the study of ancient viruses - Paleovirology, and virus classification and identification. His contributions to the scientific community includes the finding that evolutionary rate estimates of viruses appear to vary systematically with the measurement timescales, following a power-law decay function. Applications of an understanding of this so-called time dependent rate phenomenon to the molecular analyses of viruses helped researchers characterise and identify their past histories and transmission routes. This includes those of retroviruses, showing that they originated almost half a billion years ago together with their vertebrate hosts.
