Soraya Chaturongakul, Ph.D., joined the Department of Microbiology in 2008. Her research has focused primarily on bacterial foodborne pathogens, specifically Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica. Her works include regulon characterization and transcription network mapping in L. monocytogenes with the goal to understand the genetic and environmental determinants affecting transmission ability of L. monocytogenes from foods to host organisms. In addition, she is interested in identification and characterization of small molecule inhibitors targeting alternative sigma factors (e.g., FPSS and derivatives) in L. monocytogenes. Such inhibitors can be used as additional therapeutics in treatment of bacterial infection or as prophylactics in disease prevention. Her research also extends to ecology of S. enterica and its bacteriophages. Understanding the subtypes of S. enterica in Thailand and the dynamics between S. enterica and its predators may contribute to development of control strategies and improvement of food safety.
