Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University is one of the oldest departments of microbiology in Thailand. The department was established in 1958 together with the Faculty of Science, and it was the department that graduated the very first Ph.D. student in the country.

Over the past 60 years, this department has produced many highly-qualified graduates, who later became professors and executives in many universities both in Thailand and neighbouring countries. This includes one university chancellor, two faculty deans, and three deputy deans of research. It has also produced many researchers that are now working in various research institutes, many of which are nationally and internationally recognised.

The department emphasises integrations between teaching and research. In order to graduate from here, all Ph.D. students are required to publish their works in internationally recognised scientific journals, and so do most M.Sc. students.

To response to the establishment of AEC – ASEAN Economic Community, the department hopes to contribute to the progress of the community towards a knowledge-based economy by providing graduate and post-graduate training in all aspects of microbiology, including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and immunology. Specific areas of expertise can be found on the website. It also aims to include bioinformatics and genomics, particularly those that are related to the fields of Microbiology and Immunology.

Currently, the department is hosting a number of international students from ASEAN, South Asia, and Africa, and has student exchange programs with various universities from around the world, including University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (Indonesia), Universitas Airlangga Surabaya (Indonesia), and Kaohsiung Medical University (Taiwan). We are continuing our mission to be an international training ground for microbiologists of the 21st century.
